The head or the heart?

Posted in Uncategorized by christinaheaston on October 23, 2008

When a new object intrudes into our horizon, do we know it first, and then we like it, or do we like it first, and then we know it? Common sense tells us that we need to know it first; for how could we possibly like or dislike something before we even know it? That would be like putting the cart before the horse. On the other hand, history shows that Mr. Common Sense is a straitlaced character whose admonitions we do well to question; for nothing grand would ever be attempted if we always followed blindly his advice.

-F. Gonzalez-Crussi, from the book On Seeing, Things Seen, Unseen, and Obscene
